ROAD TRIP! Our past visit to Virginia Wineries & Vineyards of Central Virginia was enjoyable but interesting, to say the least. I do have a little story to tell. As some of you may or may not know, it doesn't even matter that my cousins and I are African-American. I want to share a personal experience of touring the wineries and vineyards in the Charlottesville area when I used to live in Virginia. My cousin Meek and I took a road trip together from Philadelphia, which took approximately four hours on the highway. I mention this because if you're looking for a little getaway from Philly, visiting the countryside, and embarking on a wine-tasting adventure amidst the beautiful and green picturesque landscapes this is a perfect trip. Of course, you can also consider taking a train or plane.

Having lived in Charlottesville for at least 10 years, I must say that it's not as progressive as it claims to be or is perceived to be. Despite the presence of the university and its diverse student body, there still lingers a mix of pretentiousness and racism among some locals. However, that didn't dampen our spirits as we sat there, enjoying our glasses of wonderful wine and a carefully prepared charcuterie board.

During our visit, an incident occurred that highlighted the narrow-mindedness of some individuals. As my cousin and I sat peacefully, a Caucasian woman descended the steps nearby. Upon noticing us, she paused, rolled her eyes, and displayed a look of disgust on her face, as if questioning our presence in her vicinity. Ironically, karma had its way with her, as she stumbled and fell while attempting to take the first step. It was a moment of poetic justice. Although my instinct as a Flight Attendant was to rush over and offer help, she was visibly angry and embarrassed by her own misstep, making it clear that she wanted no assistance. Seeing that she seemed alright, I remained in my seat.

This incident was purely based on race, as we were sitting there quietly, minding our own business, and enjoying the beautiful weather and scenic view. The incident served as a reminder that judging others based on appearance alone can lead to undeserved consequences.

Keep in mind, the Charlottesville area's wineries and vineyards offer a delightful escape for wine enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful retreat. While there may be occasional encounters with closed-mindedness, it's essential to rise above such negativity and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

What's the difference between a Vineyard and Winery?

A vineyard and a winery are two distinct components of the wine production process. A vineyard refers to the land where grapes are cultivated and grown. It is an agricultural establishment focused on grapevine cultivation. A winery, on the other hand, is a facility where grapes are processed to make wine. It involves the fermentation, aging, and bottling of wine. While a vineyard is primarily concerned with grape growing, a winery is involved in the entire wine production process. In summary, a vineyard is where grapes are grown, while a winery is where those grapes are transformed into wine.

These vineyards/wineries offer a variety of wines and unique experiences for visitors. Again, checking their websites for more information regarding visiting hours and availability is advisable.
